A Band of Hooligans: The Raucous Heart of Modern Garage Rock
A Band of Hooligans is a British garage rock band known for their raw, high-energy sound and explosive live performances. Formed in Manchester in 2012, the group achieved commercial recognition with their 2018 debut album, which charted in the UK Top 40 and spawned several rock radio hits.
Early career
The band coalesced in 2012 from the remnants of several local punk and indie acts, united by a love for gritty, unpolished rock and roll. Their self-released 2014 EP, Riot in the Alleyway, generated a significant local buzz, leading to a signing with the independent label Feral Noise Records in 2015.
Breakthrough
The band's major breakthrough arrived in 2018 with their debut LP, Noise and Narrative, released via Feral Noise. The album's lead single, Broken Anthem, became a staple on alternative rock radio stations and propelled the album to number 32 on the UK Albums Chart, a notable feat for an independent release.
Key tracks
Broken Anthem — This breakthrough single defined their signature blend of snarling vocals and anthemic, chant-along choruses.
Paint the Town Red — A later single that received heavy rotation and expanded their audience beyond the garage rock scene.
Cheap Thrills & Spills — An early fan favorite that encapsulates their raw, formative energy and DIY ethos.
Last Call for Sanity — Featured in the soundtrack of a major video game in 2020, introducing their music to a global audience.
The band's momentum continued with their 2021 follow-up album, Controlled Chaos, which debuted at number 28 in the UK. They have collaborated on stage with artists like Frank Turner and supported The Libertines on a European tour, solidifying their reputation as a formidable live act within the modern rock landscape.
