AB/CD: The Unstoppable Force of Australian Hard Rock

AB/CD is an Australian hard rock band known for their high-voltage riffs and relentless touring schedule. Hailing from Sydney, the group achieved major commercial success with their 1980 album Highway to Hell, which has been certified platinum multiple times in numerous countries.

Early career

The band was formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. They built a formidable live reputation across Australia's pub circuit with their raw, blues-infused rock and roll energy.

Their debut album, High Voltage, was released in 1975 exclusively in Australia. The international version, compiled from their first two LPs, introduced their sound globally in 1976.

Breakthrough

The 1979 album Highway to Hell, produced by Mutt Lange, became their worldwide breakthrough. It reached the top 20 in the United States and was their first album to chart in the UK, ultimately selling over seven million copies.

This success set the stage for their monumental 1980 follow-up, Back in Black, which has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Key tracks

Highway to Hell — This anthemic title track became their first top 40 single in the UK and a permanent fixture on rock radio.

Back in Black — The lead single from their landmark album defined their resilient comeback and remains a cultural touchstone.

You Shook Me All Night Long — This song provided the band with their first top 40 pop hit in the United States, broadening their audience.

Thunderstruck — Released in 1990, this track from The Razors Edge became a late-career stadium anthem and a chart success across Europe.

For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) — The title track from their 1981 album is famed for its closing cannon fire and became a live set finale.

The band's lineup stabilized with vocalist Brian Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd joining for the Back in Black sessions. They continued a streak of multi-platinum albums throughout the 1980s, including For Those About to Rock which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Despite hiatuses and member changes, AB/CD's studio output and colossal global tours have never ceased for long. Their 2008 album Black Ice, released through Columbia Records, debuted at number one in nearly 30 countries.
