Able‐Gleam: The Synthwave Architect
Able‐Gleam is the electronic music project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Vance, originating from Manchester, UK. The project broke into the mainstream with its 2018 debut album Neon Circuits, which charted in the UK Top 40 and achieved gold certification for streaming equivalents.
Early career
Liam Vance formed Able‐Gleam as a solo endeavor in 2012, initially releasing tracks on SoundCloud. His early work blended 80s-inspired synthwave with modern production, catching the attention of the independent label Retro Future Sounds, which released his first EP, Dusk Drive, in 2015.
Breakthrough
The breakthrough arrived in 2018 with the full-length album Neon Circuits on the larger indie imprint Electric Pulse Records. Lead single Midnight Runaway gained traction on streaming platforms and specialist radio, propelling the album to number 32 on the UK Albums Chart and securing its gold status.
Key tracks
Midnight Runaway — This driving single defined the Able‐Gleam sound and became a breakout hit on alternative radio.
Neon Circuits — The title track's intricate production showcased Vance's skill as an arranger within the synthwave genre.
Echoes in the Grid — A collaboration with vocalist Rhea, it expanded the project's reach into more melodic, pop-oriented territory.
Velocity — This instrumental track became a staple in live sets and was featured in several racing video game soundtracks.
Following the success of Neon Circuits, Able‐Gleam's 2021 sophomore album, Digital Dawn, debuted at number 24. Vance has since collaborated with artists like French producer Julien March and contributed production to tracks by indie pop act The Starfields. His work maintains a consistent presence on electronic and alternative charts without relying on major label machinery.
Fans of Able‐Gleam's brand of retro-futuristic electronica also enjoy The Midnight, which shares a similar affinity for 80s aesthetics and cinematic soundscapes. Timecop1983 offers a comparable focus on lush, melancholic synthwave compositions. The driving beats in Gunship's music will also appeal, particularly their use of featured vocalists. For a darker, more analog approach, Perturbator is a key artist in the same broader genre.
The music of Able‐Gleam is a regular feature in the rotations of dedicated synthwave and retro electronic radio stations. Online radio streams focusing on independent electronic music and specialty FM programs frequently program tracks from Neon Circuits and Digital Dawn, cementing the project's status in the modern synthwave movement.
