Abratzk: The Industrial Metal Prodigy
Abratzk is a German industrial metal project known for its aggressive fusion of electronic beats and distorted guitar riffs. Hailing from Berlin, the artist achieved notable commercial success with the 2018 album Schattenmaschine, which charted in several European countries and received a gold certification in Germany.
Early career
The project was formed in 2010 by multi-instrumentalist and producer Leo Brandt. Initially operating from a small home studio in Berlin's Friedrichshain district, Brandt self-released a series of raw EPs, beginning with 2011's Stromausfall.
These early works caught the attention of the independent label Noisebringer Records, which signed Abratzk in 2013. The debut album Metallischer Lärm followed in 2014, establishing a dedicated following within the European underground metal scene.
Breakthrough
Abratzk's breakthrough arrived in 2018 with the sophomore album Schattenmaschine, released via the larger imprint Sonic Titan Media. The album's lead single, Stahlherz, gained heavy rotation on metal-focused radio and streaming platforms, propelling the album to number 24 on the German charts.
Schattenmaschine remained on the German album chart for 17 weeks and was certified gold six months after its release. This success led to main stage bookings at major festivals like Wacken Open Air and Euroblast.
Key tracks
Stahlherz — This breakthrough single defined the Abratzk sound with its pulsing synth line and anthemic chorus.
Maschinenraum — A fan-favorite album track known for its complex, rhythmic programming and guest vocals from Chris Harms of Lord of the Lost.
Null und Nichtig — The song's music video, featuring dystopian Berlin visuals, surpassed 10 million views on YouTube.
Neonfieber — This 2021 single marked a shift towards more melodic industrial metal and charted in Austria.
Zerbersten — A high-energy collaboration with fellow German act Eisbrecher, released as a standalone single in 2022.
Following the breakthrough, Abratzk headlined a sold-out European tour in 2019. The project's third studio album, 2021's Digital Ghost, debuted at number 18 in Germany and spawned the successful single Neonfieber.
Leo Brandt has since expanded Abratzk into a full live band for touring. Recent years have seen notable collaborations, including production work for other acts on the Sonic Titan Media roster and a remix for the veteran industrial group Oomph!.
Fans of Abratzk's intense brand of industrial metal often also enjoy the work of Rammstein, sharing a penchant for theatrical, machine-driven heaviness. The melodic aggression is comparable to Eisbrecher, another leading force in the German industrial scene. Listeners appreciate the similar blend of electronics and metal found with Emigrate, the side project of Rammstein's Richard Kruspe. The genre-bending approach also aligns with Lord Of The Lost, who similarly merge gothic and industrial elements.
Abratzk's music is a staple on dedicated industrial and modern metal radio stations. The project's hits are frequently featured on alternative rock radio stations and specialist online metal streams, ensuring their pulsating rhythms reach a broad audience of heavy music enthusiasts.
