Abschäumer: Germany's Industrial Metal Provocateurs

Abschäumer is a German industrial metal band known for its aggressive sound and provocative socio-political lyrics. Hailing from Berlin, the group achieved notable underground success with their 2018 album Zivilisationskrankheit, which charted on the German Alternative Charts and solidified their cult following.

Early career

Abschäumer was formed in 2010 by vocalist/programmer Marc and guitarist Thorsten, who met in Berlin's vibrant underground club scene. Their early sound was a raw fusion of EBM and thrash metal, self-released through their own imprint, Schädelplatten. The 2013 debut EP Menschenmaterial circulated through niche digital distributors, catching the attention of several European underground labels.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough arrived in 2018 with the release of their first full-length album, Zivilisationskrankheit, on the independent label Trisol Music Group. The album's lead single received heavy rotation on key European alternative radio programs, propelling the album to number 12 on the Deutsche Alternative Charts, where it remained for seven weeks.

Key tracks

Zivilisationskrankheit — This title track defined their signature blend of pummeling rhythms and critical lyrical themes.

Konsumopfer — A viral music video for this song significantly expanded their audience beyond the German scene.

Gott Maschine — Known for its intense live performance, this track became a staple in their concert setlists.

Neue Unordnung — Featured on several international industrial music compilations, broadening their reach.

Systemsprenger — This later single from their 2021 album showcased a more refined, yet more aggressive, production style.

Building on this momentum, Abschäumer released the follow-up album Systemsprenger in 2021. They have since collaborated with artists like fellow industrial act Die Krupps on the 2022 split single Schwarzes Eis and performed at major European festivals including Wave-Gotik-Treffen and Amphi Festival.

Fans of Abschäumer's harsh electronic metal also frequently listen to Die Krupps, pioneers of the German industrial metal sound. Eisbrecher shares a similar command of anthemic, guitar-driven industrial music. The aggressive electronic elements connect to OOMPH!, another influential force in Neue Deutsche Härte. For the more experimental side, listeners explore KMFDM and their enduring legacy of hard-hitting industrial rock.

Abschäumer's music is a regular feature on industrial and alternative rock radio stations across our network.
