Absentation: The Architects of Modern Melodic Metal

Absentation is a Finnish melodic death metal band that emerged from Helsinki in the late 2000s. The group is best known for their 2014 sophomore album, Chrysalis, which charted within the Top 20 in their home country and solidified their reputation for blending aggressive riffs with soaring, melancholic melodies.

Early career

Formed in 2008, Absentation began as a project between guitarist Lauri Kinnunen and vocalist Mikko Vainio. Their self-released debut EP, Fragments of Dusk, in 2010, caught the attention of the independent label Dark North Records. This led to their first full-length album, The Apex Directive, in 2012, which established their core sound within the Scandinavian metal scene.

Breakthrough

The band's major breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the album Chrysalis, released through the larger Finnish imprint Spinefarm Records. The lead single, Veil of Sorrow, received heavy rotation on national rock radio, helping propel the album to number 18 on the Finnish albums chart. This success was followed by extensive European touring throughout 2015 and 2016.

Key tracks

Veil of Sorrow — This breakthrough single from Chrysalis is celebrated for its anthemic chorus and remains a staple of their live set.

Ashen Crown — A track showcasing their technical prowess, it features a notable guest guitar solo from Omnium Gatherum's Markus Vanhala.

Chrysalis — The ambitious title track is an eight-minute epic that demonstrates the band's skill in crafting dynamic song structures.

Echoes in the Static — From their 2018 album Terminal Reality, this song highlights their evolution into more atmospheric territories.

The Apex Directive — The title track from their debut album is a fan-favorite that defined their early, more raw melodic death metal approach.

Following the cycle for Terminal Reality in 2018, Absentation collaborated with Swedish producer Jens Bogren, known for his work with Opeth and Katatonia. Their most recent work, the 2022 EP Resonant Echoes, saw them experimenting with more progressive elements while maintaining their melodic core. The band continues to be a consistent live presence across European summer festivals.

Fans of Absentation often appreciate the work of similar Finnish melodic metal acts such as Insomnium for their shared emphasis on melancholic atmosphere. Omnium Gatherum offers a comparable blend of aggression and melody, while Children Of Bodom pioneered the Finnish sound that influenced Absentation's earlier work. Wintersun represents a more symphonic and technically complex parallel within the same national scene.

Absentation's music has earned a dedicated slot in the rotations of many melodic metal and modern metal radio stations. Their tracks are frequently featured on specialized online metal radio streams and independent music radio stations that focus on the European extreme metal landscape.
