Acid Moth: The Psychedelic Sting of Modern Stoner Rock

Acid Moth is a Swedish stoner rock and psychedelic doom band known for their fuzzed-out riffs and hypnotic soundscapes. Hailing from Gothenburg, the group achieved a notable underground milestone when their 2018 album Solaris charted on the Swedish Heatseeker list for three consecutive weeks.

Early career

Formed in 2012, Acid Moth emerged from the fertile heavy music scene of Gothenburg. The founding duo, vocalist/bassist Elin Jansson and guitarist Mikael "Micke" Strand, began crafting their signature sound in a basement rehearsal space, blending 70s psychedelia with modern sludge. Their self-released debut EP, Fuzz Mantra, in 2014 caught the attention of the independent label Stonewalled Records, which signed the band later that year.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough arrived in 2016 with their first full-length album, Lunar Queen. Released via Stonewalled, the album's lead single, Desert Driver, gained heavy rotation on European rock radio specialty shows. This exposure helped Lunar Queen move over 10,000 units in its first year, earning it a certified silver award in Sweden for independent releases.

Key tracks

Desert Driver — This single defined their early sound and became a staple on European stoner rock playlists.

Solaris (Part I: Ascension) — The epic title track from their breakthrough album showcased their ambition for longer, conceptual compositions.

Stonebird — A collaboration with vocalist John Garcia, this track expanded their reach within the international desert rock community.

Hive Mind — This track from their 2021 album Hive Mind marked a turn towards denser, more layered production.

The success of Lunar Queen was followed by the critically acclaimed 2018 album Solaris. This concept album saw Acid Moth incorporating more progressive elements and analog synthesizers, a direction solidified on their 2021 release Hive Mind. Their collaboration with legendary desert rock vocalist John Garcia on the track Stonebird in 2019 further cemented their reputation as serious players in the global heavy psych scene.
