Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia: The Pioneers of UK Industrial Metal
Agoraphobia is a British industrial metal band known for their aggressive fusion of electronic programming and heavy guitar riffs. The group achieved notable commercial success with their 2007 album Panic Attack, which charted in several European territories and solidified their cult following.
Early career
The band was formed in Manchester, England in 1998 by vocalist/programmer Marcus Thorne and guitarist Liam Vance. Their early sound was a raw amalgamation of metal and early 2000s electronic music, leading to a self-released EP titled Closed Circuit in 2001. This demo caught the attention of the independent label Sonic Whip Records, which signed the duo and released their debut full-length, Isolation Tanks, in 2003.
Breakthrough
Agoraphobia's breakthrough arrived in 2007 with their third studio album, Panic Attack, released on the larger imprint Noise Pollution Ltd. The album's lead single, Static Cling, received heavy rotation on alternative music video channels and propelled the album to number 42 on the UK Albums Chart. Panic Attack eventually achieved Silver certification in the UK for sales exceeding 60,000 copies.
Key tracks
Static Cling — This 2007 single became the band's signature track and their first to break into the UK Rock Top 20 chart.
Feedback Loop — A standout from their 2010 album Digital Ghost, this track showcased a more melodic side while maintaining their industrial edge.
Panic Attack — The intense title track from their breakthrough album is a fan favorite in their live set, known for its frenetic pace.
Cathode Ray — This song from their debut album remains a staple, illustrating their foundational sound of distorted vocals and sequenced beats.
Echo Chamber — Featuring a guest vocal from fellow industrial act Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman, this 2014 collaboration expanded their audience.
Following their breakthrough, Agoraphobia toured extensively throughout Europe and released the album Digital Ghost in 2010. The band took a hiatus after 2015's Data Negative but returned in 2022 with a new EP, Signal Loss, demonstrating a renewed focus on atmospheric, synth-heavy compositions. Their influence is heard in a wave of younger acts blending metal with electronic production.
Fans of Agoraphobia's intense industrial metal often appreciate the work of Godflesh, who pioneered the genre's foundational sound. The rhythmic aggression of Fear Factory also shares clear DNA with Agoraphobia's music. For the more electronic-leaning side, Front Line Assembly offers a similar cyberpunk aesthetic. The UK's own Pitchshifter represents another key act from a similar scene and era.
