Alexisonfire: Pioneers of Canadian Post-Hardcore

Alexisonfire is a seminal post-hardcore band from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The group achieved major commercial success in their home country, earning multiple platinum certifications and winning several Juno Awards.

Early career

Formed in 2001, Alexisonfire quickly distinguished themselves with a visceral three-vocalist attack featuring George Pettit's screams, Wade MacNeil's gritty singing, and Dallas Green's melodic clean vocals. Their self-titled debut album, released on Distort Entertainment in 2002, became an underground sensation in Canada, eventually being certified Platinum for sales exceeding 100,000 copies.

Breakthrough

The band's mainstream breakthrough arrived with their second album, 2004's Watch Out!. Certified Platinum in Canada, it spawned the hit single Accidents and significantly expanded their audience. This success was solidified by their 2006 major-label debut, Crisis, on Vagrant Records, which debuted at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and also achieved Platinum status.

Key tracks

Accidents — This track from Watch Out! became a defining anthem, showcasing their dynamic range between melody and aggression.

Sweet Dreams of Otherness — The 2022 comeback single proved their potent chemistry remained intact after a long hiatus.

After a period of side projects and an indefinite hiatus announced in 2011, Alexisonfire surprised fans with reunion shows in 2015. They fully returned with new music, culminating in their fifth studio album, Otherness, released in 2022 via Dine Alone Records. The album was critically acclaimed and debuted at number 4 on the Canadian charts.

The intricate guitar work and emotional depth of Protest The Hero share a technical proficiency with Alexisonfire's compositions. The raw, chaotic energy of The Chariot mirrors the unhinged moments in Alexisonfire's earlier work. Lastly, the melodic post-hardcore of Silverstein resonates with the balance of scream and melody that defines the genre.
