Alien Sex Fiend: Pioneers of Deathrock and Electro-Industrial
Alien Sex Fiend is a British band that emerged from the London post-punk and gothic rock scene in the early 1980s. Formed by the husband-and-wife duo of Nik Fiend (vocals) and Mrs. Fiend (keyboards, drums), the group carved a unique niche with their blend of deathrock, industrial, and electronic music, becoming cult icons with a dedicated global following.
Early career
Alien Sex Fiend formed in London in 1982, directly from the city's vibrant Batcave club scene, a crucible for gothic rock and post-punk. Their self-titled debut single in 1983 on their own 13th Moon Records established their signature sound: Nik Fiend's theatrical, growled vocals over Mrs. Fiend's primitive drum machine patterns and distorted keyboards, creating a lo-fi, psychedelic, and horror-tinged aesthetic.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough came with their 1984 debut album, "Who's Been Sleeping in My Brain?", which solidified their cult status. Released through Anagram Records, the album captured their chaotic live energy and defined their deathrock and early industrial sound, leading to extensive touring and a strong presence in alternative music circles throughout the decade.
Key tracks
Ignore the Machine - This 1984 single became an underground anthem, encapsulating their rebellious spirit and minimalist electro-punk sound.
Dead and Buried - A track from their debut album that remains a staple of their live set, showcasing their horror-themed lyrics and driving rhythms.
E.S.T. (Trip to the Moon) - This song highlights their more psychedelic and experimental side, often stretching into lengthy, improvisational pieces in concert.
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Alien Sex Fiend continued to prolifically release albums, including "It" (1986) and "Curse" (1990), while steadily evolving their sound to incorporate more elements of acid house and industrial rock. Their DIY ethic, maintaining control through their own 13th Moon label, has allowed them to sustain a long-term career on their own terms, consistently releasing music and performing live for their dedicated fanbase.
Artists with a similar pioneering spirit in the British gothic and industrial realms include The Sisters Of Mercy, who also shaped the early gothic rock sound. The Damned share a punk rock energy and theatrical flair. For a more electronic industrial approach, Cabaret Voltaire offers a parallel path of experimentation.
