All That Remains: American Metalcore Pioneers

All That Remains is an American metalcore band from Springfield, Massachusetts, known for blending melodic death metal with hard rock and alternative metal. The band achieved significant commercial success with their 2008 album Overcome, which debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold.

Early career

Formed in 1998, All That Remains was founded by guitarist Oli Herbert and vocalist Philip Labonte, who had previously performed with the death metal band Shadows Fall. Their debut album, Behind Silence and Solitude, was released in 2002 through Prosthetic Records and established their early sound rooted in melodic death metal.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough came with their third studio album, 2006's The Fall of Ideals, released via Prosthetic Records. This record marked a shift towards a more accessible metalcore sound and produced the hit single This Calling, which gained prominence through its inclusion in the Saw III soundtrack, significantly expanding their audience.

Key tracks

This Calling - This track from The Fall of Ideals became a signature song, featured in a major horror film franchise and cementing their place in the metalcore scene.

Two Weeks - The lead single from Overcome showcased a strong melodic rock influence and became the band's highest-charting single, receiving heavy rotation on rock radio.

What If I Was Nothing - A later hit from 2012's A War You Cannot Win, this song demonstrated their continued ability to blend aggressive verses with anthemic, clean-sung choruses.

Chiron - A track from Overcome that exemplifies their technical guitar work and relentless double-bass drumming alongside Labonte's versatile vocal delivery.

Six - This song from The Fall of Ideals remains a fan favorite for its complex structure and balance of sheer aggression and melodic sensibility.

Following their breakthrough, All That Remains continued to release albums consistently, including For We Are Many in 2010 and The Order of Things in 2015, often debuting in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. The band experienced the tragic loss of founding guitarist Oli Herbert in 2018 but continued performing and recording, releasing Victim of the New Disease later that year.

Fans of All That Remains' blend of melody and aggression often appreciate the work of similar American metalcore acts. Killswitch Engage shares a similar geographic origin and pioneering role in the genre's development. As I Lay Dying offers a comparable mix of melodic guitar leads and harsh vocals. Trivium parallels their evolution from metalcore roots into a broader heavy metal style. Bullet For My Valentine also successfully merged metalcore with catchy, radio-friendly rock hooks.
