Althea And Donna

Althea And Donna: The Reggae Duo That Conquered The UK Charts
Althea & Donna were a Jamaican reggae vocal duo consisting of schoolfriends Althea Forrest and Donna Reid. Their 1977 single "Uptown Top Ranking" became a surprise international smash, topping the UK Singles Chart and bringing a fresh, youthful energy to the reggae genre.
Early career
Althea Forrest and Donna Reid were teenagers from Kingston, Jamaica, who began singing together casually. Their talent was spotted by producer Joe Gibbs, who recorded their first tracks, including "Uptown Top Ranking," at his studio with backing by his house band, The Professionals.
Breakthrough
The duo's breakthrough was sudden and massive. Released on the Lightning record label, "Uptown Top Ranking" was a playful answer record to Trinity's "Three Piece Suit," riding the same rhythm track.
Its infectious charm caught fire in the UK, where it soared to Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in early 1978, making them the youngest female duo ever to achieve that feat at the time.
Key tracks
Uptown Top Ranking — This chart-topping single defined their career with its catchy melody and confident, youthful patois lyrics.
Late Night Blues — A track from their debut album that showcased a smoother, more romantic side of the duo's vocal harmony.
Make It Up — Another cut from their album that further demonstrated their adeptness at the rocksteady-influenced reggae style.
Capitalizing on their sudden fame, they quickly recorded and released their only album, also titled Uptown Top Ranking, in 1978 on the Virgin Front Line label.
The album, produced by Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, featured several tracks but could not replicate the singular success of the hit single. The duo returned to private life after their brief but spectacular moment in the spotlight, leaving behind a legendary reggae one-hit wonder.
