Amalgam: The Pioneers of Progressive Metal Fusion

Amalgam is a progressive metal band from Oslo, Norway, known for its intricate fusion of technical metal with jazz and classical elements. The group achieved international recognition with their 2018 album Convergence, which charted in several European countries and solidified their cult status.

Early career

Formed in 2009 by guitarist and principal composer Lars Vikernes and vocalist Anya Petrova, Amalgam began as a university project in Oslo. Their self-released debut EP, Fragmented Foundations in 2011, caught the attention of the independent label Sonic Evolution Records, which signed them the following year.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough arrived in 2015 with their second studio album, The Catalyst. Released via Sonic Evolution, the album's lead single gained traction on specialized digital radio and streaming platforms, leading to a surprise entry at number 12 on the Norwegian album charts. This success prompted a wider European distribution deal with the larger imprint, Chromatic Sound.

Key tracks

Between The Buried And Me shares a similar ambition for technical complexity and sudden stylistic shifts. For the fusion elements, Animals As Leaders offers a comparable instrumental mastery. The melodic sensibility can be found in the work of TesseracT, known for their atmospheric take on the djent subgenre.
