Arcadia: The Sophisticated Synth-Pop Side Project

Arcadia was a sophisticated British synth-pop supergroup formed by three members of Duran Duran during that band's mid-1980s hiatus. The project, led by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor, achieved significant commercial success, most notably with its debut album which sold over a million copies in the United States alone.

Early career

Arcadia was conceived in 1984 as Duran Duran entered a period of fragmentation, with members pursuing different projects. The trio of Le Bon, Rhodes, and Taylor decamped to Paris, aiming for a more atmospheric and studio-crafted sound distinct from their main band's funk-inflected pop.

Their first release was the single "Election Day" in late 1985, which immediately set a darker, more experimental tone. The track was released under the Capitol Records imprint in the US and on EMI's Parlophone label in the UK.

Breakthrough

The project's major breakthrough came with the 1985 album So Red the Rose. The record was a critical and commercial smash, propelled by stylish music videos and high-profile collaborations.

It peaked at number 23 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was eventually certified Platinum by the RIAA. In the UK, the album reached the Top 30, solidifying the side project as a serious artistic endeavor.

Key tracks

Election Day — This debut single, featuring a guest guitar solo by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, became a Top 10 hit in the UK and established Arcadia's moody, cinematic aesthetic.

Goodbye Is Forever — A lush ballad that showcased the project's emphasis on complex arrangements and Le Bon's more introspective lyrical style, receiving heavy MTV rotation.

The Promise — This track highlighted the collaborative nature of the album, featuring backing vocals from Grace Jones and Sting, adding to its art-rock credibility.

Missing — A later single remixed by John "Jellybean" Benitez, it found success on US dance charts, demonstrating the project's versatility beyond album-oriented rock.

Following the success of So Red the Rose, Arcadia released only one more single, "Say the Word," in 1986 before the members reconvened with Duran Duran. The project remains a definitive snapshot of 1980s art-pop, celebrated for its ambitious production and visual artistry. A collection of remixes, The Promise, was released in 1986, but no further studio albums followed.
