Art Brut
Art Brut: The Art Punk Satirists of British Indie Rock
Art Brut is a British indie rock and art punk band known for their witty, self-referential lyrics and energetic, lo-fi sound. Formed in London in 2003, the group carved a distinct niche in the post-punk revival scene with their debut album "Bang Bang Rock & Roll," which garnered critical acclaim and a cult following.
Early career
Art Brut was formed by vocalist and lyricist Eddie Argos alongside guitarist Chris Chinchilla, guitarist Ian Catskilkin, bassist Frederica Feedback (Freddy Feedback), and drummer Mikey Breyer. The band quickly established their signature style: talk-sung, narrative lyrics dissecting the absurdities of art, music, and modern life over driving, punk-inspired guitar riffs. Their early demos and live shows built a strong word-of-mouth reputation, leading to the release of their debut single "Formed a Band" in 2004 on the label Fierce Panda.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2005 with the release of their debut album, "Bang Bang Rock & Roll," initially on the Banquet label before being picked up by Rough Trade Records. The album was a critical success, praised for its raw energy and Argos's uniquely observational and humorous delivery. While not a major commercial chart success, the album became a defining record of the mid-2000s indie rock landscape, with singles like "Emily Kane" and the title track receiving significant airplay on alternative rock radio stations.
Key tracks
Formed a Band - This debut single served as a manifesto, declaring their intent to write a song that makes "Israel and Palestine get along."
Emily Kane - A standout track from their debut, it's a heartfelt and awkward anthem about a teenage crush that became an indie rock staple.
Modern Art - This song perfectly encapsulates their art punk ethos, with Argos humorously detailing a disappointing trip to a gallery over a frantic guitar riff.
Direct Hit - A later single known for its infectious, shout-along chorus and driving rhythm, showcasing their consistent energy.
The band followed up with "It's a Bit Complicated" in 2007 and "Art Brut vs. Satan" in 2009, the latter produced by Frank Black of the Pixies. These albums solidified their reputation for clever, guitar-driven rock. After a hiatus, they returned with "Brilliant! Tragic!" in 2011 and "Wham! Bang! Pow! Let's Rock Out!" in 2018, continuing to refine their distinctive blend of punk energy and lyrical wit. Their music, a staple of the 2000s British indie rock scene, remains a touchstone for fans of intelligent, energetic alternative rock.
