Athlete: The Indie Rock Storytellers of Post-Britpop

Athlete is a British alternative rock band that emerged from the vibrant London music scene in the early 2000s. The group achieved notable commercial success, with their second album, Tourist, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2005.

Early career

The band formed in Deptford, London in 1999, originally consisting of childhood friends Joel Pott (vocals/guitar), Carey Willetts (bass), Steve Roberts (drums), and Tim Wanstall (keyboards). Their early sound blended indie rock with electronic textures, leading to a deal with the independent label Regal Recordings, which released their debut EP, Westside, in 2001.

Breakthrough

Athlete's breakthrough arrived with their sophomore album, 2005's Tourist. Released on Parlophone, the album's more polished, anthemic sound resonated widely, propelled by its lead single Wires. This critical and commercial peak was solidified when Tourist was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize that same year.

Key tracks

Wires - This emotionally charged single, inspired by the premature birth of Pott's daughter, became the band's most recognizable song and a top 5 hit in the UK.

El Salvador - The driving lead single from their debut album Vehicles & Animals introduced their quirky, guitar-led indie sound to a wider audience.

Twenty Four Hours - A soaring, synth-backed anthem from Tourist that showcased the band's move towards a grander, more atmospheric rock style.

Superhuman Touch - This track from their third album, Beyond the Neighbourhood, exemplifies their continued exploration of indietronica and layered production.

Black Swan Song - A poignant, piano-led ballad from their final album, Singles 01-10, that serves as a fitting epilogue to their career.

The band released two further studio albums, 2007's Beyond the Neighbourhood and 2009's Black Swan, before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2013. During their active years, Athlete cultivated a dedicated fanbase through their introspective lyrics and melodic, genre-blending approach to British guitar music.

Fans of Athlete's melodic and atmospheric take on indie rock may also appreciate the work of Keane, who similarly crafted piano-driven anthems within the post-Britpop wave. The introspective songwriting of Travis shares a common ground with Athlete's more personal narratives. For those drawn to the electronic-infused rock elements, Embrace offers a comparable blend of grandiosity and intimacy. The accessible yet thoughtful alternative rock of Snow Patrol also aligns with the sonic territory Athlete explored.
