BABYMETAL: The Pioneers of Kawaii Metal
BABYMETAL is a Japanese musical unit that forged the globally recognized genre of kawaii metal, a fusion of J-pop idol aesthetics with the aggressive sounds of heavy metal and electronic music. Formed in 2010, the group from Tokyo has achieved remarkable international success, selling out world tours and seeing their 2014 debut album certified gold in the United States.
Early career
BABYMETAL was formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, managed by the talent agency Amuse, Inc. The original trio consisted of Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno), and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi), backed by a skilled session band known as the Kami Band.
Their early singles, such as "Doki Doki Morning" in 2011, introduced their unique concept through viral music videos. This led to the release of their first major-label self-titled album in Japan in 2014, which laid the foundation for their imminent global breakthrough.
Breakthrough
The group's international breakthrough occurred in 2014 with the worldwide release of their debut album BABYMETAL. The album's lead single, "Gimme Chocolate!!", became a massive viral sensation on YouTube, introducing their sound to millions globally.
This online success translated into tangible chart success, with the album debuting on the Billboard 200 and reaching the Top 5 of the US Rock and Hard Rock charts. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the album a gold certification in 2021, signifying over 500,000 units sold in the United States.
