Big Boi

Big Boi: The Pioneering Lyricist of Southern Hip-Hop
Big Boi is one half of the legendary Atlanta hip-hop duo OutKast, a groundbreaking act that reshaped the sound and scope of Southern rap. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, he and partner André 3000 achieved monumental success, including the diamond-certified album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," which sold over 11 million copies in the United States alone.
Early career
Born Antwan André Patton in 1975, he grew up in Savannah, Georgia before moving to Atlanta. He met André Benjamin (André 3000) at Atlanta's Tri-Cities High School in the early 1990s, and the duo formed OutKast, signing to the local LaFace Records label in 1992.
Their 1994 debut album, "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik," immediately established a distinct, funk-laden Southern sound. The album's title track and "Player's Ball" were major regional hits, setting the stage for their rapid ascent.
Breakthrough
OutKast's mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2000 with the single "Ms. Jackson," a massive international hit from their fourth album, "Stankonia." The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a week and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2002.
The duo's creative peak and commercial zenith came in 2003 with the release of the double album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below." Big Boi's "Speakerboxxx" disc showcased his intricate, rapid-fire flow over dense Southern funk, while André's half explored psychedelic pop.
Key tracks
Ms. Jackson — This Grammy-winning global smash provided OutKast with their first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Way You Move — Featuring Sleepy Brown, this funk anthem from Big Boi's "Speakerboxxx" also reached number one on the Hot 100.
B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) — A frenetic, genre-blurring single from "Stankonia" that became a critical landmark for its breakneck pace and production.
Kryptonite (I'm On It) — The lead single from Big Boi's 2010 solo debut "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty," it affirmed his solo prowess with a platinum certification.
Solo ventures and collaborations
Following OutKast's period of reduced activity post-2006, Big Boi launched a successful solo career. His first official solo album, 2010's "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty," was critically acclaimed and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart.
He has remained a prolific collaborator, working with artists across genres, from Janelle Monáe and Phantogram (as the duo Big Grams) to Kid Cudi and Killer Mike. Big Boi released subsequent solo albums like "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors" (2012) and "Boomiverse" (2017), continuing to refine his signature style.
Big Boi's influence is heard in the intricate, funk-driven production and clever, agile lyricism of many Southern hip-hop artists. For fans of his style, explore similar artists like Killer Mike who shares a commitment to sharp political and social commentary over heavy beats. The playful, eclectic spirit of OutKast can also be found in Janelle Monae, a frequent collaborator known for concept albums and funk influences. The smooth, melodic Southern rap of Goodie Mob, part of the Dungeon Family collective with OutKast, offers a complementary sound. Additionally, the inventive production and lyrical dexterity of JID carries forward the tradition of technical excellence Big Boi helped pioneer.
Big Boi's catalog, both with OutKast and as a solo artist, maintains heavy rotation on hip-hop radio stations, classic rap FM channels, and online radio streams dedicated to defining sounds of the 2000s
