Bow Wow Wow: The New Wave and Punk Provocateurs

Bow Wow Wow was a British new wave band that carved a unique and controversial path through the early 1980s music scene. The group is best known for their percussive, Burundi-beat driven sound and the distinctive vocals of teenage frontwoman Annabella Lwin.

Early career

The band was formed in London in 1980 by former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. McLaren assembled a group of musicians from the band Adam and the Ants, including guitarist Matthew Ashman, bassist Leigh Gorman, and drummer Dave Barbarossa, and recruited 14-year-old Burmese-born singer Annabella Lwin.

Breakthrough

Bow Wow Wow's breakthrough arrived with their 1982 debut album, See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah, City All Over! Go Ape Crazy!, released on RCA Records. The album spawned their biggest hit, I Want Candy, a reworking of a 1965 Strangeloves track, which became a signature new wave anthem.

Key tracks

I Want Candy - This 1982 single remains the band's most recognizable song, a frenetic cover that defined their party-ready, percussive style.

C·30 C·60 C·90 Go! - Their 1980 debut single was a controversial ode to home taping that showcased their driving Burundi beat and provocative lyrics.

Go Wild in the Country - A 1981 single that highlighted the band's ability to merge pop melodies with their trademark rhythmic intensity.

W.O.R.K. (N.O. Nah No! No! My Daddy Don't) - An early track that encapsulated the band's punk energy and anti-establishment stance.

Do You Wanna Hold Me? - A later single from 1983 that demonstrated a more polished pop-rock direction.

The band's career was marked by controversy, from the suggestive lyrics and imagery surrounding their young singer to the famous "1980's nude portrait" album cover. Despite internal tensions and shifting lineups, Bow Wow Wow left a lasting mark on the post-punk landscape with their innovative fusion of world rhythms and new wave pop. Their influence can be heard in the later work of artists who embraced eclectic, rhythmic rock.

Fans of Bow Wow Wow's energetic and stylized sound also appreciate the music of Adam And The Ants, who share a foundation in dramatic, percussive new wave. The pop sensibility of The Go-Go's offers a similar upbeat, early-80s charm. For the punk-infused side of their work, listeners might enjoy The Pogues for their own brand of chaotic energy.

Bow Wow Wow's catalog of inventive and danceable post-punk continues to be celebrated for its originality and sheer audacity.
