Breakbot: The French Touch of Nu-Disco

Breakbot is the stage name of French musician and producer Thibaut Berland, a key architect of the modern nu-disco and French house revival. Hailing from Paris, his career is defined by a string of infectious singles and his acclaimed 2012 debut album By Your Side, which solidified his reputation for crafting impeccably produced, feel-good dance music.

Early Career

Thibaut Berland began his musical journey in the early 2000s, initially gaining attention through a series of remixes for artists like Justice and Digitalism. His early original productions, such as the 2008 track Baby I'm Yours, showcased a distinct shift towards a warmer, funk-inflected sound inspired by 70s disco and 80s boogie. This stylistic direction set him apart from the harder-edged French electro of the era and laid the groundwork for his signature style.

Breakthrough

Breakbot's breakthrough arrived with the release of his debut album, By Your Side, in 2012 on the influential Ed Banger Records. The album, featuring vocals from Ruckazoid and Irfane, was a critical and commercial success, praised for its sunny melodies and polished production. Tracks like the title cut By Your Side and Fantasy became instant classics within the nu-disco scene, leading to extensive international touring and establishing Berland as a leading figure in the genre's resurgence.

Key Tracks

Baby I'm Yours - This 2008 single, with its talk-box hook and shimmering groove, served as an early blueprint for Breakbot's defining nu-disco sound.

By Your Side - The euphoric title track from his 2012 debut album became his anthem, perfectly encapsulating his talent for crafting timeless, joyful dance music.

Fantasy - Featuring vocals by Ruckazoid, this standout track from the debut album is a masterclass in funky basslines and soaring, melodic disco-house.

You Should Know - A collaboration with R&B singer Irfane, this smooth and soulful cut highlights Breakbot's skill in blending modern production with classic songwriting sensibilities.

Get Lost - This 2016 single marked a return with its driving rhythm and hypnotic vocal sample, demonstrating the consistent quality of his output.

Following his debut, Breakbot continued to release music and perform live, often with a full band. His work, including the 2020 single All of You, maintains a consistent focus on groove and melody. While often associated with the Ed Banger collective, his sound shares a clear lineage with fellow French acts like Justice in its electronic precision, though with a far funkier palette. His influence can also be heard in the work of contemporaries such as Kavinsky, who similarly mines retro aesthetics, and the polished house of Madeon. The joyful, disco-referencing style of Parcels also operates in a similar musical space to Breakbot's output.
