BWO: Sweden's Pioneers of Electropop
Bodies Without Organs, known professionally as BWO, is a Swedish electronic pop group formed in 2004. The trio, consisting of Alexander Bard, Marina Schiptjenko, and Martin Rolinski, achieved major success in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe with their infectious synth-driven sound.
Early career
BWO was assembled in 2004 by Alexander Bard, a seasoned figure in Swedish pop known for his work with Army of Lovers and Vacuum. Bard recruited singer Martin Rolinski, a former Swedish Idol contestant, and vocalist Marina Schiptjenko, who had previously collaborated with Bard in the project Vacuum. The group signed with the Stockholm-based label Scandipop and released their debut single, "Living in a Fantasy," that same year.
Breakthrough
The group's commercial breakthrough arrived in 2005 with their debut album, Prototype, which peaked at number 2 on the Swedish Albums Chart. The album was propelled by the massive hit single "Sunshine in the Rain," which reached number 3 in Sweden and achieved platinum certification. This success firmly established BWO as a leading force in the Scandinavian electropop scene.
Key tracks
Sunshine in the Rain — This platinum-selling 2005 single became their signature song and an enduring dance-pop anthem across Europe.
Temple of Love — Their 2006 cover of The Sisters of Mercy track showcased a darker synth style and became another major chart hit in Sweden.
Chariots of Fire — The lead single from their 2006 album Halcyon Days, it solidified their reputation for crafting high-energy, melodic pop.
Voodoo Magic — This 2008 single exemplified their polished production and earned them a place in the Melodifestivalen contest that year.

Following their initial success, BWO represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 semi-final with the song "Temple of Love," though they did not qualify for the final. The group released a series of successful albums, including Halcyon Days (2006) and Big Science (2009), the latter released on their own label, BWO Music. They went on hiatus in 2010 but reunited in 2016, continuing to release new music and perform live, maintaining a dedicated fanbase.
Fans of BWO's brand of catchy, synthesized pop often enjoy other Swedish electronic acts. Alcazar shares a similar commitment to flamboyant, high-energy dance music. September operates in the same vibrant Eurodance and electropop territory. The influence of Army Of Lovers, Alexander Bard's earlier project, is evident in BWO's theatrical pop sensibility. Basshunter represents another facet of Sweden's dominant electronic music culture with his upbeat synth melodies.
BWO's catalog remains a staple on numerous European pop and dance radio stations. Their hits are frequently featured on mainstream pop FM stations, dedicated electronic music channels, and online radio streams that specialize in 2000s nostalgia and contemporary Scandinavian pop music.
