Carpenter Brut: The Architect of Modern Synthwave

Carpenter Brut is the pseudonym of a French electronic music producer and composer, a leading force in the dark synthwave genre. Hailing from Poitiers, France, the project is celebrated for its aggressive, cinematic sound that has propelled it to headline major festivals and achieve significant cult status within the retro-electronic scene.

Early career

The Carpenter Brut project emerged around 2012, shrouded in the anonymity typical of many early synthwave artists. Initial releases were a series of three EPs, simply titled EP I, EP II, and EP III, which were later compiled into the 2015 album Trilogy. These early works, distributed through the label No Quarter Prod, quickly defined the artist's signature style: a punishing blend of 80s-inspired synthesizers, heavy metal guitar riffs, and relentless drum machines.

Breakthrough

Carpenter Brut's breakthrough into wider recognition was solidified with the 2018 debut studio album, Leather Teeth. This conceptual record, released via Universal Music subsidiary Caroline International, presented a more refined and narrative-driven version of the sound, moving beyond pure instrumental tracks to include featured vocalists. The album's success was cemented by intense, visually-striking live performances that translated the studio aggression to the stage, building a dedicated international following.

Key tracks

Turbo Killer - This track from EP II became an early anthem, perfectly encapsulating the project's high-energy, retro-futurist aesthetic with its iconic music video.

Maniac - A cover of the theme from the film Maniac (2012), this collaboration with filmmaker and composer Kavinsky showcased Carpenter Brut's talent for reinventing dark synth-driven scores.

Leather Teeth - The title track from the debut album introduced a more melodic and structured songwriting approach while maintaining the project's characteristic sonic intensity.

Beware the Beast - Featuring heavy metal vocals, this track exemplifies the seamless fusion of synthwave and extreme metal that defines much of the artist's later work.

The momentum continued with the 2021 album Leather Terror, which further explored collaborations with artists from the metal and rock worlds, including Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Carpenter Brut has also gained notable recognition for original film scores, such as the music for the 2022 horror movie The Wolf's Call.

Fans of Carpenter Brut's intense and cinematic brand of synthwave may also appreciate the work of Perturbator, another French pioneer of the dark synthwave scene. Dance With The Dead similarly merges synthwave with heavy guitar-driven hooks. The more soundtrack-oriented work of Gunship offers a complementary, albeit often more vocal-focused, take on the genre. For a foundational influence, the driving electronic scores of John Carpenter, the filmmaker and composer whose name inspired the project's moniker, are essential listening.
