Cloud Nothings: The Ferocious Heart of Modern Indie Rock

Cloud Nothings is an American indie rock band known for its evolution from lo-fi bedroom pop to a blistering, cathartic guitar force. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, the group achieved a significant commercial and critical peak with their 2012 album Attack on Memory, which charted on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in the UK.

Early career

The project began in 2009 as the solo recording outlet of Dylan Baldi, who was then a student in Cleveland. Working quickly on a laptop, Baldi self-released a stream of catchy, fuzzy pop songs through his Bandcamp page, catching the attention of blogs and leading to a series of singles and EPs on labels like Bridgetown and Old Flame Records.

Breakthrough

The turning point came in 2012 with the release of Attack on Memory, recorded at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio and released on Carpark Records. This album marked a drastic shift, trading lo-fi charm for raw, post-hardcore intensity and complex song structures, garnering widespread acclaim and placing the band at the forefront of a new, heavier indie rock sound.

Key tracks

Stay Useless - This track from Attack on Memory encapsulates the band's newfound balance between infectious melody and gritty, driving punk energy.

I'm Not Part of Me - A standout from 2014's Here and Nowhere Else, this song combines an anthemic chorus with the band's trademark relentless rhythm section.

Wasted Days - The nearly nine-minute epic from Attack on Memory is a career-defining moment, building from a repetitive riff into a volcanic eruption of noise and screamed catharsis.

Modern Act - Showing the band's melodic resilience, this track from 2017's Life Without Sound offers a more polished but still urgent take on guitar-driven rock.

Pattern Walks - A closing track that exemplifies the band's noise rock tendencies, featuring a sprawling, dissonant, and hypnotic guitar outro.

The band, solidified as a power trio with Baldi joined by drummer Jayson Gerycz and bassist TJ Duke, continued this intense exploration on subsequent albums for Carpark and later labels like Merge, including Here and Nowhere Else (2014) and The Shadow I Remember (2021). Their consistent touring and recording have cemented their reputation as a formidable and enduring live act within the indie rock and punk spheres.

Fans of Cloud Nothings' abrasive yet catchy approach may also appreciate the work of Parquet Courts, who share a similar blend of punk intellect and wiry guitar lines. The melodic noise of Title Fight also intersects with Cloud Nothings' heavier direction. The driving, emotional intensity of Algernon Cadwallader finds a darker counterpart in Baldi's songwriting, while the raw energy of METZ parallels the band's most ferocious moments.
