Cultural Amnesia: The Post-Punk Revivalists
Cultural Amnesia is a British post-punk band known for their atmospheric sound and politically charged lyrics. Hailing from Manchester, the group achieved a significant cult following with their 2018 debut album, which charted within the UK Independent Album Breakers Top 20.
Early career
Cultural Amnesia formed in late 2013, born from the city's fertile DIY music scene. The founding members, vocalist Sasha Vance and guitarist Leo Marsh, initially self-released a series of raw, limited-edition cassette EPs, catching the ear of independent label Cold Transmission Records in 2015.
Their first official EP, Statues Fall, was released by the German label in 2016. This early work established their signature blend of driving basslines, shimmering guitar work, and Vance's direct, narrative vocal delivery.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2018 with their debut full-length album, The Last Day of the Polytechnic. Released on Cold Transmission, the album was praised for its sharp social commentary and immersive production.
It spent seven consecutive weeks on the UK Independent Album Breakers Chart, peaking at number 14. While not achieving mainstream chart certification, the album's sustained independent success solidified their status.

Building on their debut's momentum, Cultural Amnesia released their critically acclaimed second album, Archive Fever, in 2021. The record saw them refining their songwriting and exploring more textured soundscapes, leading to tours across Europe and select North American dates.
Their work has attracted attention for collaborations, including production work on a track for the Edinburgh-based band The Ninth Wave and a remix for the Italian darkwave group Selvaggia.
Fans of the intricate guitar work and atmospheric tension of Interpol will find familiar ground here. The driving, socio-political energy of Savages is a clear touchstone for the band.
