Cutting Crew
Cutting Crew: The 80s Sophisti-Pop Hitmakers
Cutting Crew is a British rock and pop band best known for their massive 1986 international hit "(I Just) Died in Your Arms". Formed in London in 1985, the group achieved significant commercial success with their debut album, Broadcast, which sold over three million copies worldwide and reached the Top 10 in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Early Career
The band was founded in 1985 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Van Eede, who had previous experience in the music scene, and Canadian guitarist Kevin MacMichael. They quickly secured a record deal with the label Siren Records/Virgin after crafting a set of polished, radio-ready songs that blended rock energy with sophisticated pop production.
Breakthrough
Cutting Crew's breakthrough came swiftly in 1986 with the release of their debut single, "(I Just) Died in Your Arms". The song became a global phenomenon, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and reaching the Top 5 in the UK. Its success propelled their first album, Broadcast, to multi-platinum status, cementing their place in the 80s music landscape.
Key Tracks
(I Just) Died in Your Arms - The band's signature power ballad and a number-one single that defined their sound and 80s pop-rock.
I've Been in Love Before - Another successful single from Broadcast that reached the Top 10 in the US, showcasing their knack for melodic hooks.
One for the Mockingbird - A track that highlighted the band's more ambitious and atmospheric songwriting style.
The band released their second album, The Scattering, in 1989, which included the single "(Between a) Rock and a Hard Place". While it could not match the phenomenal success of their debut, it maintained their presence on rock radio. After disbanding in the early 1990s, Nick Van Eede revived the Cutting Crew name in the 2000s with new musicians, releasing albums like Grinning Souls (2006) and Add to Favourites (2015), continuing to tour and record.
Fans of Cutting Crew's melodic 80s rock may also enjoy the sophisticated pop of The Outfield, another band known for a major 80s hit. The smooth rock style of Mike and The Mechanics shares a similar adult-oriented approach. Listeners might also appreciate the polished songcraft of The Hooters from the same era.
