Cynic: Pioneers of Progressive Death and Jazz Metal

Cynic is an American progressive metal band originally formed in Miami, Florida, in 1987. The group is celebrated for its groundbreaking fusion of technical death metal with jazz fusion and progressive rock, most notably on its influential 1993 debut album Focus.

Early career

Founded by guitarist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert, who had both played on Death's seminal 1991 album Human, Cynic began as a more traditionally death metal-oriented act. The band's early demos, like 1991's Reflections of a Dying World, showcased a rapidly evolving sound that incorporated complex structures and melodic sensibilities, leading to a deal with Roadrunner Records.

Breakthrough
