dc Talk is an American Christian rock and hip hop group formed in the late 1980s. The trio, consisting of Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max, became one of the most influential acts in contemporary Christian music, known for blending rock, rap, and pop into a groundbreaking sound.

Early career

The group formed in 1987 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where the members were students. Their initial sound was heavily rooted in hip-hop, leading to their debut album, dc Talk, released in 1989 on ForeFront Records.

Breakthrough

dc Talk's mainstream and critical breakthrough arrived with their 1995 album Jesus Freak. This project marked a significant shift towards alternative rock and grunge influences, selling over two million copies and earning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album.
