Demons & Wizards: The Epic Metal Supergroup

Demons & Wizards is a powerful heavy metal collaboration formed by two of the genre's most distinctive voices. This transatlantic project unites the talents of German guitarist and vocalist Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian and American guitarist Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth.

Early career

The seeds for Demons & Wizards were sown in the late 1990s when their respective bands, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth, toured together. Kürsch and Schaffer discovered a shared creative vision and began writing material that blended their signature styles. The project officially came to life in 1999, leading to a recording contract with the German label SPV/Steamhammer.

Breakthrough

The band's self-titled debut album, Demons & Wizards, was released in early 2000 to immediate acclaim within the metal community. It successfully merged the epic, fantasy-driven power metal of Blind Guardian with the darker, thrash-influenced American heavy metal of Iced Earth. The album charted in Germany and solidified their status as a notable supergroup in the genre.

Key tracks

Fiddler on the Green — This melancholic ballad, based on a tragic concept by Hansi Kürsch, became an instant fan favorite and a staple of their live performances.

Heaven Denies — The album's opening track perfectly showcases the seamless blend of Schaffer's aggressive riffing and Kürsch's layered vocal harmonies.

Blood on My Hands — A driving, heavier track that highlights the Iced Earth influence and the project's thematic depth.

Terror Train — Featured on their second album, this song exemplifies their evolved, more progressive songwriting with complex structures.

Crimson King — The epic title track from their 2005 sophomore release, drawing inspiration from Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Their follow-up album, Touched by the Crimson King, arrived in 2005, continuing the conceptual lyrical themes rooted in fantasy literature. Despite a lengthy hiatus where both members focused on their primary bands, Demons & Wizards reunited for a successful tour in 2019 and released their third studio album, III, in 2020.

Fans of Demons & Wizards who appreciate the fusion of European melodic sensibilities with US power metal intensity also enjoy Blind Guardian for their orchestral fantasy metal. Iced Earth delivers the foundational riff-oriented American heavy metal sound. Symphony X offers a similar blend of progressive complexity and powerful vocals. Kamelot provides another take on theatrical, story-driven power metal with soaring melodies.

The music of Demons & Wizards maintains a strong presence on dedicated metal and hard rock radio stations. Their anthemic songs are regularly featured on specialty metal shows across classic rock FM stations and online rock radio streams, celebrating the legacy of this collaborative project.
