Dr. Octagon: The Abstract Hip Hop Surgeon
Dr. Octagon is the groundbreaking and surreal alter ego of rapper and producer Kool Keith. Emerging from the Bronx, New York, this project is celebrated for its wildly inventive and often bizarre approach to hip hop, most notably on the influential 1996 album Dr. Octagonecologyst.
Early career
The persona was created by Kool Keith, a founding member of the influential Ultramagnetic MCs. Following his work with that group, Keith developed the character of Dr. Octagon, a time-traveling, gynecologist-surgeon from Jupiter, as an outlet for his most abstract and graphic lyrical concepts.
Breakthrough
The project's breakthrough arrived in 1996 with the release of Dr. Octagonecologyst on Bulk Recordings. The album, produced by Dan "The Automator" Nakamura and featuring DJ Qbert on turntables, became a cult classic for its avant-garde production, horrorcore and sci-fi themes, and Keith's unhinged, stream-of-consciousness delivery.
Key tracks
Blue Flowers - This track became the project's most recognizable song, showcasing its signature blend of eerie jazz samples and surreal, narrative-driven lyrics.
Earth People - The album's opening statement, it immediately establishes the album's otherworldly and chaotic aesthetic with its famous "Earth people, New York and California" hook.
Girl Let Me Touch You - A prime example of the album's darkly comedic and controversial subject matter, delivered over a minimalist, unsettling beat.
No Awareness - This track highlights the technical prowess behind the project, featuring complex scratching from DJ Qbert and abstract, disjointed production.
Despite its underground status, Dr. Octagonecologyst achieved significant critical acclaim and influenced a generation of alternative hip hop artists. The original collaboration fractured after one album, leading to legal disputes over the name. Kool Keith revived the persona in the 2000s for albums like Dr. Octagon Part II and Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation, often working with different producers.
Fans of Dr. Octagon's abstract and experimental style might also enjoy the work of Deltron 3030, another sci-fi hip hop concept album featuring Dan The Automator. The lyrical complexity of MF Doom shares a similar penchant for intricate rhyme schemes and alter egos.
