Eagle‐Eye Cherry: The Soulful Voice of Alternative Rock

Eagle‐Eye Cherry is a Swedish singer‐songwriter who rose to global fame in the late 1990s with his distinctive blend of soulful rock and pop. His 1998 debut album, Desireless, became a multi‐platinum international success, propelled by the era‐defining single Save Tonight.

Early career

Born in Stockholm in 1968, Eagle‐Eye Cherry grew up in a deeply artistic family as the son of jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. He initially pursued acting and moved to New York City, but his musical roots eventually called. His first professional steps involved drumming for the band Nåid and contributing to his sister Neneh Cherry's 1992 album Homebrew.

Breakthrough

The year 1998 marked Eagle‐Eye Cherry's explosive breakthrough. His debut album Desireless, released on the Work Group/SME Records label, sold over four million copies worldwide. The lead single Save Tonight became a radio staple, reaching the top 10 in numerous countries including the UK and across Europe.

Key tracks

Save Tonight — This global smash defined the late‐90s alternative pop‐rock sound and remains his signature song.

Falling in Love Again — A key track from Desireless that further showcased his soulful vocal style and songwriting.

Long Way Around — This single from his 2000 follow‐up album Living in the Present Future demonstrated his continued melodic craft.

Are You Still Having Fun? — A later career highlight from his 2012 album Can't Give You Everything, marking a mature return.

Following the massive success of Desireless, Eagle‐Eye Cherry released Living in the Present Future in 2000. While it did not match the commercial peak of his debut, it produced solid singles and he continued to tour internationally. After a hiatus, he returned with Sub Rosa in 2003 and later Can't Give You Everything in 2012, maintaining his core sound while exploring new production styles.

His collaborative work includes writing and performing with artists like Titiyo and appearing on tracks for others. Eagle‐Eye Cherry's music, particularly the anthemic Save Tonight, has enjoyed enduring popularity in films, commercials, and television shows, introducing his sound to new generations of listeners.
