Fleur East: The Energetic Force of UK Dance-Pop
Fleur East is a British singer, songwriter, and rapper known for her high-energy dance-pop and funk-infused sound. The London-born artist first captured national attention as a finalist on the UK talent show The X Factor in 2014, before achieving a major commercial breakthrough with her own music.
Early Career
Fleur East's musical journey began in her youth, performing with her sister in a gospel choir. Her first major step into the industry came in 2005 when she formed the girl group Addictiv Ladies, who later appeared on The X Factor in 2012. After the group disbanded, East returned to The X Factor as a solo contestant in 2014, finishing as the runner-up and subsequently signing a record deal with Syco Music.
Breakthrough
Fleur East's solo breakthrough arrived in 2015 with the release of her debut single Sax. The track, a vibrant fusion of pop, funk, and saxophone hooks, became an instant hit, peaking at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and achieving platinum certification. This success propelled her debut album, Love, Sax and Flashbacks, which was released later that year and charted within the UK Top 40.
Key Tracks
Sax - This platinum-selling single defined her signature sound and became her biggest chart hit.
More and More - A follow-up single that showcased her confident pop-rap delivery and maintained her chart presence.
Breakfast - The lead single from her second album, highlighting a matured, soulful R&B direction.
Favourite Thing - A collaboration with DJ and producer Sigala that blended her vocals with contemporary dance production.
Following her debut era, Fleur East parted ways with Syco and later signed with Hunter Records. She released her second studio album, Fearless, in 2020, which embraced a more personal lyrical style and a blend of pop, soul, and R&B. Beyond music, she has established herself as a television and radio presenter, notably co-hosting the UK's Hits Radio breakfast show.
Fans of Fleur East's dynamic pop and R&B style may also enjoy the music of Little Mix, another UK girl group known for powerful vocals and pop anthems. The soulful pop approach of Jessie J shares a similar bold and theatrical quality. Listeners might also appreciate the dance-pop energy of Becky Hill, a British vocalist prominent on club tracks. The funk-infused modern pop of Meghan Trainor also offers a comparable vibrant and retro-inspired feel.
