Glenn Frey

Glenn Frey: The Architect of California Soft Rock
Glenn Frey was a founding member, guitarist, and vocalist for the legendary American rock band the Eagles. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, his songwriting partnership with Don Henley produced some of the best-selling albums in music history, including the iconic Hotel California.
Early career
Born in 1948, Glenn Lewis Frey began his musical journey in the Detroit rock scene before relocating to Los Angeles in the late 1960s. He initially found work as a session musician and songwriter, collaborating with artists like Linda Ronstadt, whose 1971 band served as the incubator for the Eagles.
Breakthrough
Frey's breakthrough came with the formation of the Eagles in 1971, signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records. The band's blend of country, rock, and harmonious pop quickly found success, but their global domination was cemented with 1976's Hotel California, which has sold over 32 million copies worldwide.
Key tracks
Take It Easy - Co-written by Frey and Jackson Browne, this 1972 single was the Eagles' debut and first major hit, establishing their signature sound.
Lyin' Eyes - This Frey-led soft rock classic from 1975 won a Grammy Award and became a staple of adult-oriented radio.
Hotel California - While sung by Don Henley, Frey's co-writing and iconic guitar intro with Don Felder created one of rock's most recognizable anthems.
The Heat Is On - Frey's 1984 solo single for the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack became a top 10 pop hit, showcasing his success outside the Eagles.
You Belong to the City - This 1985 solo track from the Miami Vice soundtrack epitomized the sleek, synth-driven sound of mid-80s rock and topped the charts.
Following the Eagles' initial breakup in 1980, Frey launched a successful solo career, releasing albums like No Fun Aloud (1982) and Soul Searchin' (1988). He also pursued acting, appearing in television shows and films. The Eagles reunited in 1994 for the massively successful Hell Freezes Over tour and continued to record and perform until Frey's passing in 2016.
For fans of Glenn Frey's smooth vocal style and melodic soft rock craftsmanship, similar artists include Don Henley his primary Eagles collaborator. Jackson Browne shares the same Los Angeles singer-songwriter roots and lyrical detail. The country-rock harmony of The Doobie Brothers also aligns with Frey's early work. Finally, Linda Ronstadt whose band launched Frey's career, explores similar musical territory.
