GoGo Penguin: The Manchester Trio Redefining Modern Jazz

GoGo Penguin is a British instrumental trio from Manchester, England, known for their innovative fusion of acoustic jazz, electronic music, and post-rock rhythms. Their unique sound has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated global following, leading to a Mercury Prize nomination for their 2014 album v2.0.

Early career

Formed in Manchester in 2012, the original lineup consisted of pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Grant Russell, and drummer Rob Turner. The band quickly developed a signature style, drawing from their diverse backgrounds in jazz, classical, and electronic music to create a cinematic and rhythmically complex sound. Their self-titled debut EP was released in 2012, followed by their first full-length album, Fanfares, on the Gondwana Records label later that same year.

Breakthrough

The group's breakthrough arrived with their second studio album, v2.0, released in 2014. This record earned them a prestigious Mercury Prize nomination, significantly raising their international profile and establishing them as leaders in the new wave of British jazz. Following this success, they signed with the legendary Blue Note Records in 2016, joining a historic lineage of jazz innovators.

Key tracks

Hopopono - A defining track from v2.0 that showcases their trademark blend of driving piano motifs, double bass grooves, and skittering, electronica-inspired drum patterns.

Murmuration - This piece exemplifies their post-rock influences, building from a delicate piano melody into a powerful, soaring crescendo driven by relentless rhythm.

Protest - A highlight from their Blue Note debut A Humdrum Star, characterized by its urgent, repetitive piano figure and hypnotic, evolving energy.

Atomised - A track from their self-titled 2020 album that illustrates their continued refinement, balancing melodic beauty with intricate, glitchy percussion.

Kora - From their 2022 album Everything Is Going to Be OK, this song features Nick Blacka's melodic bass work and reflects a more expansive, atmospheric side of their composition.

The band's lineup evolved in 2022 with drummer Jon Scott joining, replacing founding member Rob Turner. Their musical journey continues with albums like 2023's Everything Is Going to Be OK, which further explores themes of resilience through their distinctive acoustic-electronic lens. GoGo Penguin maintains a rigorous international touring schedule, performing at major festivals and concert halls worldwide.

Fans of GoGo Penguin's genre-blending approach may also enjoy the work of Portico Quartet, another group that merges jazz with ambient and electronic textures. The cinematic piano trio explorations of The Bad Plus share a similar spirit of rhythmic innovation. Listeners might also appreciate the electronic-infused jazz of Flying Lotus or the intricate compositions of fellow UK group Mercy Army.
