Gorefest: Pioneers of Dutch Death 'n' Roll

Gorefest was a Dutch death metal band that formed in 1989 and became a significant force in the European extreme metal scene. Hailing from the Netherlands, the group is best known for their influential mid-1990s shift in sound, which helped pioneer the death 'n' roll subgenre.

Early career

Gorefest originated in Goordorp, Netherlands, in 1989, founded by vocalist/bassist Jan-Chris de Koeijer, guitarist Frank Harthoorn, drummer Marc Hoogendoorn, and guitarist Alex van Schaik. The band quickly established a brutal, technical style of death metal, releasing their debut demo, "Tangled in Gore," in 1990, which led to a deal with the German label Nuclear Blast. Their first full-length album, "Mindloss," arrived in 1991, solidifying their reputation within the underground death metal community.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough came with their second album, "False," released in 1992. This record showcased a more refined and powerful production, gaining them wider recognition across Europe. While maintaining a death metal core, the album hinted at the groove-oriented evolution that would define their subsequent work, marking a critical point in their career development.
