Hotlegs
Hotlegs: The Art Rock Prelude to 10cc
Hotlegs was a short-lived but pivotal British art rock group, best known as the direct precursor to the successful band 10cc. Formed in Manchester, England, the group's primary achievement was recording the unexpected hit single "Neanderthal Man," which sold over two million copies globally and reached the UK Top 10 in 1970.
Early Career
The group formed in Manchester around 1970, consisting of musicians who would become the core of 10cc: Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Lol Creme, and Kevin Godley. Initially coming together for session work, they recorded at Strawberry Studios, which was co-owned by Stewart. Their early work was characterized by a blend of art rock, progressive folk, and pop sensibilities, setting the stage for their more famous successor.
Breakthrough
Hotlegs' breakthrough came swiftly in 1970 with the release of the single "Neanderthal Man" on the Fontana label. The song's novelty appeal, driven by a stomping rhythm and chanted vocals, propelled it to number two on the UK Singles Chart and achieved significant international sales. This surprise success led to the recording of their only album, "Thinks: School Stinks," later that same year.
Key Tracks
Neanderthal Man - This was the group's sole major hit, a quirky, rhythm-heavy track that demonstrated their willingness to experiment within the pop format.
Um Wah Um Wack - Featured on their lone album, this track further showcased the group's art rock and progressive folk tendencies.
Desperate Dan - Another track from "Thinks: School Stinks," it highlighted the melodic and harmonic sophistication that would later define 10cc's sound.
Despite the commercial success of "Neanderthal Man," the album "Thinks: School Stinks" did not achieve similar chart heights. The experience of working together, however, proved invaluable. By 1972, the members of Hotlegs, along with Graham Gouldman who had contributed as a songwriter, formally reconstituted themselves as the band 10cc, leaving the Hotlegs name behind. The group's brief existence provided a crucial testing ground for the collaborative partnership and studio craft that would make 10cc one of the most successful British groups of the 1970s.
Artists exploring a similar blend of art rock and clever pop during the same era include 10cc, the far more successful group that directly evolved from Hotlegs' lineup. The whimsical and experimental side of British rock can also be heard in the work of The Bonzo Dog Band, while the progressive folk elements connect to artists like The Incredible String Band.
