Johnny Clegg

Johnny Clegg: The Zulu Rock Pioneer
Johnny Clegg was a South African singer-songwriter and anthropologist who fused Zulu musical traditions with Western folk and rock. His multi-racial bands Juluka and Savuka became global symbols of anti-apartheid resistance, selling over five million albums worldwide and achieving platinum status in several countries.
Early career
Born in England in 1953, Clegg moved to South Africa as a child. His musical journey began in his teens when he was mentored by Zulu street musician Charlie Mzila, mastering the language, maskandi guitar, and isishameni dance. He formed the duo Johnny & Sipho with Sipho Mchunu in 1969, laying the groundwork for their future band.
Defying apartheid laws, they performed in private venues and townships. Their debut album as Juluka, Universal Men, was released in 1979 on the South African label RPM, offering a sophisticated, poetic fusion that was largely ignored by mainstream radio.
Breakthrough
Juluka's breakthrough came with their third album, Scatterlings (1982). The title track and Impi became anthems, with the latter's critique of colonial history resonating powerfully despite being banned by the state broadcaster. The album achieved gold status and international release on Warner Bros. Records, introducing Clegg's sound to a global audience.
Key tracks
Scatterlings of Africa — This poetic track became an international signature song, later featured on the Rain Man soundtrack.
Impi — Juluka's defiant, rhythmically intense song about a historical Zulu victory became a banned anti-apartheid anthem.
Great Heart — From his second band Savuka, this 1987 song was a worldwide hit and the theme for the film Jock of the Bushveld.
Asimbonanga — Savuka's powerful 1987 tribute to Nelson Mandela became a global protest hymn, famously performed with Mandela himself in 1999.
The Crossing — This 1993 Savuka track from the album Heat, Dust and Dreams earned Clegg a Billboard Music Award for Best World Music Album.
After Juluka disbanded in 1985, Clegg formed the more rock-oriented Savuka, achieving major success in Europe and North America. Their album Shadow Man (1988) went platinum in France and Italy. Clegg continued to tour and record as a solo artist after Savuka, releasing albums like Human (2010) and King of Time (2017).
Artists exploring similar fusions of African rhythms with rock and pop include Miriam Makeba, who also used music as a tool for social justice. Ladysmith Black Mambazo brought isicathamiya vocals to the world stage through collaborations. Vusi Mahlasela, known as "The Voice," shares a legacy of struggle and hopeful songwriting. Freshlyground continues the tradition of contemporary South African cross-cultural pop.
Johnny Clegg's energetic live shows and genre-defying catalog ensure his music remains in rotation on world music stations, classic rock FM channels featuring global sounds, and online radio streams dedicated to socially conscious music. Independent music radio stations frequently program his hits for their historical and musical significance.
