Kent
Kent: Sweden's Pioneers of Melancholic Indie Rock
Kent is a Swedish alternative rock band that formed in Eskilstuna in 1990. They became one of Scandinavia's most successful groups, selling millions of records and achieving a legendary status in their home country with their introspective lyrics and atmospheric sound.
Early career
Founded by vocalist Joakim Berg and guitarist Martin Sköld, the band initially played under the name Jones & Giftet, exploring a rawer, more guitar-driven sound. After signing with RCA Records and shortening their name to Kent, they released their self-titled debut album in 1995, which laid the groundwork for their signature melancholic style.
Breakthrough
The band's commercial and critical breakthrough in Sweden came with their third album, Isola, released in 1997. Its lead single, Om du var här, became a massive hit, propelling the album to multi-platinum status and establishing Kent as a dominant force in Swedish music, a position they would hold for over a decade.
Key tracks
Om du var här - This soaring ballad from the Isola era marked Kent's transition to a wider, more atmospheric sound and became their first major chart hit.
Music Non Stop - A driving, synth-infused track that showcased the band's evolution towards a more electronic and polished production in the early 2000s.
747 - The epic, seven-minute lead single from the 2006 album Du & jag döden, representing the peak of their ambitious, cinematic rock sound.
Ingenting - A later-career highlight known for its minimalist arrangement and poignant lyrics, demonstrating Berg's enduring skill as a songwriter.
The band's later work continued to evolve, incorporating greater electronic elements on albums like Vapen & ammunition (2002) and Du & jag döden (2006), both of which debuted at number one in Sweden. Kent maintained a consistent output of chart-topping albums before announcing their final studio album, Då som nu för alltid, in 2016, culminating in a farewell tour that same year.
Fans of Kent's blend of brooding Scandinavian rock and melodic sensibility should also explore the work of The Cardigans, who share a knack for combining pop melodies with darker lyrical undertones. The atmospheric rock of Broder Daniel captures a similar Swedish indie spirit, while the anthemic quality of The Ark offers a more flamboyant take on the region's alternative scene.
