Laserdance: Pioneers of Italo-Disco and Spacesynth

Laserdance is an instrumental electronic music project that became a defining force in the Italo-disco and spacesynth genres. Originating from the Netherlands, the group achieved significant commercial success in the 1980s, particularly in Europe, with their futuristic synth melodies and driving rhythms.

Early career

The project was formed in the early 1980s by producer Erik van Vliet. Operating from the Netherlands, van Vliet crafted a distinctive sound characterized by melodic synthesizer lines and programmed drum machines, tapping into the era's fascination with technology and science fiction.

Breakthrough

Laserdance's breakthrough came with their debut album, Future Generation, released in 1984. The album's title track and other instrumental cuts resonated strongly across European dance floors, establishing the project's signature spacesynth style and leading to further successful albums throughout the decade.

Key tracks

Future Generation - This title track from their debut album became an anthem of the spacesynth movement.

Humanoid Invasion - A later hit that exemplifies the project's science-fiction themed, high-energy instrumental approach.

Power Run - A track showcasing the driving basslines and arpeggiated melodies central to their sound.

The music of Laserdance shares stylistic roots with other electronic acts of the era. Koto similarly crafted instrumental Italo-disco hits with a futuristic edge. The melodic synth work is comparable to that of Cyber People. For fans of driving electronic instrumentals, Fancy offers a related vocal-led style from the same period.
