Mallory Knox: The UK's Post-Hardcore Melodists
Mallory Knox was a British rock band that carved a distinct niche in the UK's post-hardcore and alternative rock scene during the 2010s. Hailing from Cambridge, England, the group achieved notable chart success with their second album, Asymmetry, which debuted at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart.
Early career
Mallory Knox formed in 2009, taking their name from a character in the film Natural Born Killers. The original lineup consisted of Mikey Chapman (vocals), Joe Savins (guitar), James Gillett (guitar), Sam Douglas (bass), and Dave Rawling (drums). They built a grassroots following through energetic live shows and self-released their debut EP, Pilot, in 2011, which caught the attention of the independent label A Wolf at Your Door.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived with their debut full-length album, Signals, released in 2013. This record, produced by Dan Weller, entered the UK Albums Chart at number 33, establishing Mallory Knox as a serious force. Their momentum continued with the 2014 follow-up, Asymmetry, which climbed to number 16 on the UK chart and spawned several successful singles.
Key tracks
Lighthouse — This anthemic single from Signals became a fan favorite and a staple of their live set, showcasing their blend of melodic hooks and powerful riffs.
Ghost in the Mirror — A key track from Asymmetry, it highlighted the band's evolving songwriting with its dynamic structure and introspective lyrics.
Better Off Without You — This driving, radio-friendly song from their 2017 self-titled album demonstrated a refined, arena-ready rock sound.
When Are We Waking Up? — Featured on their final EP, it captured the band's mature melodic sensibilities and served as a poignant closing chapter.
The band's third studio album, simply titled Mallory Knox, arrived in 2017 and marked a period of transition, including the departure of bassist Sam Douglas. Following this release and subsequent touring, vocalist Mikey Chapman announced his exit in 2018. The remaining members continued briefly with Sam Douglas returning on bass and taking over lead vocals before the band ultimately decided to disband in 2020.
Fans of Mallory Knox's emotive and guitar-driven sound often appreciate the work of similar UK-based acts. Don Broco shares a knack for blending heavy grooves with infectious pop melodies. You Me At Six operated in a similar space of anthemic British rock during the same era. Lower Than Atlantis also delivered a potent mix of post-hardcore energy and sharp, accessible songwriting.
Mallory Knox's catalog remains a fixture on many alternative rock radio stations and online rock radio streams. Their songs, particularly from the Signals and Asymmetry albums, are regularly featured in rotations that celebrate the best of 2010s British rock music.
