Mel & Kim
Mel & Kim: The Synth-Pop Sisters of British Pop
Mel & Kim were a British pop duo consisting of sisters Melanie and Kim Appleby. Their brief but impactful career in the late 1980s produced a string of chart-topping singles that defined the infectious, house-influenced sound of UK pop during that era.
Early career
Sisters Melanie (born 1966) and Kim Appleby (born 1961) grew up in London with a passion for performing. They initially worked as dancers and backing vocalists before being discovered by producer Pete Waterman, who signed them to his successful Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) production and label team in 1986.
Breakthrough
The duo's 1987 debut single, Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend), became an immediate hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. This success was solidified by their debut album, F.L.M. (Fun-Loving-Music), released later that year, which peaked at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Platinum.
Key tracks
Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend) - This debut single introduced their energetic, SAW-produced dance-pop sound to the charts.
Respectable - Their first and only UK number-one single, a defining anthem of late-80s British pop.
F.L.M. - The title track from their successful album showcased their confident, fun-loving persona.
That's the Way It Is - Another top 10 hit that continued their run of success in 1988.
More Than Words Can Say - A ballad released after Melanie's illness, performed solely by Kim.
Their momentum was tragically halted when Melanie was diagnosed with cancer. Kim carried on to record the single More Than Words Can Say alone, but the duo effectively ended with Melanie's passing in 1990. Kim later pursued a solo career.
Fans of the classic SAW sound and 80s British pop might also enjoy the work of Kylie Minogue, who also found early success with the production team. The energetic dance-pop of Banarama shares a similar chart-focused spirit. For another iconic sister act from the era, listen to Erasure, who mastered synth-pop with brilliant vocals.
