Metal Church: Pioneers of American Power Metal
Metal Church is an American heavy metal band that forged a distinct path in the 1980s thrash and power metal scene. Hailing from San Francisco, California, and later based in Seattle, Washington, the group achieved a significant cult following and chart success with their influential self-titled debut and its acclaimed follow-up, The Dark.
Early career
Formed in 1980 under the initial name Shrapnel, the band solidified its classic lineup with vocalist David Wayne, guitarists Kurdt Vanderhoof and Craig Wells, bassist Duke Erickson, and drummer Kirk Arrington. After relocating to Seattle and changing their name to Metal Church, they independently recorded their debut album, leading to a deal with the renowned thrash label Elektra Records in 1984.
Breakthrough
The band's self-titled 1984 debut, Metal Church, was a breakthrough, critically praised for its blend of traditional metal melody and thrash aggression. This success was cemented by their 1986 sophomore album, The Dark, which entered the Billboard 200 chart and remains a landmark release in the US power metal genre.
