Mt. Joy: The Indie Folk Rock Storytellers

Mt. Joy is an American indie folk rock band known for their introspective songwriting and melodic, guitar-driven sound. The band achieved significant recognition with their self-titled debut album, which spawned the viral hit "Astrovan" and launched them into the mainstream indie scene.

Early career

The band formed in 2016 after childhood friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) reconnected in Los Angeles. They took their name from a mountain near Cooper's hometown in Pennsylvania and quickly recorded their first two songs, "Astrovan" and "Sheep," with producer Caleb Nelson.

Breakthrough

Mt. Joy's breakthrough arrived swiftly in 2017 when "Astrovan" gained massive traction on Spotify, accumulating millions of streams. This online success led to a record deal with Dualtone Records and the release of their self-titled debut album in 2018, which charted on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and solidified their place in the modern folk rock landscape.

Key tracks

Astrovan - This breakout single, with its tale of a psychedelic experience in a church van, became a streaming phenomenon and the band's signature track.

Sheep - The poignant companion piece to "Astrovan," this early release showcased the band's knack for social commentary wrapped in folk-rock melody.

Julia - A highlight from their debut album, this track exemplifies the band's ability to craft emotionally resonant and anthemic indie rock songs.

Silver Lining - A later single that became a fan favorite for its uplifting message and soaring chorus, demonstrating their evolving sound.

The band's second album, Rearrange Us, arrived in 2020, exploring more personal themes and polished production. They continued their trajectory with 2022's Orange Blood, an album that incorporated brighter, more expansive sounds while maintaining their lyrical depth. Mt. Joy has built a reputation as a compelling live act, touring extensively and performing at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza.

Fans of Mt. Joy's heartfelt, guitar-based indie folk may also enjoy the melodic rock of The Lumineers. The introspective lyricism and folk-infused sound of Caamp shares a similar spirit. For another take on modern Americana and rock, explore the work of The Head And The Heart.
