Nebula
Nebula: The Fuzzed-Out Pioneers of Desert Rock
Nebula is an American rock band known for their heavy, psychedelic sound rooted in the desert rock and stoner rock genres. Formed from the ashes of the influential band Fu Manchu, they have built a substantial catalog of albums and EPs celebrated for their raw, spacey, and riff-driven approach.
Early career
Nebula was formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, California by guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano after their departure from Fu Manchu. The duo, later joined by bassist Mark Abshire, quickly established their own sonic identity, favoring a looser, more improvisational, and psychedelically infused style than their previous outfit.
Breakthrough
The band's early releases on the small label MeteorCity, including the 1998 EP Let It Burn and their 1999 debut album To the Center, were immediate hits within the underground rock scene. These records defined the Nebula sound: blistering fuzz guitar, propulsive rhythms, and a clear reverence for 70s proto-metal and psychedelia, earning them a dedicated following in Europe and the United States.
Key tracks
To the Center - The title track from their debut album is a quintessential stoner rock anthem, built on a massive, repeating riff that encapsulates their early, heavy sound.
Giant - This track from the Let It Burn EP showcases their ability to blend relentless drive with moments of trippy, atmospheric guitar work.
Atomic Ritual - The title song from their 2003 album highlights a tighter, more focused approach to songwriting while maintaining their signature fuzz-drenched energy.
Clearlight - A later career track that demonstrates their enduring commitment to sprawling, instrumental psychedelic rock journeys.
Throughout the 2000s, Nebula released a steady stream of material on labels like Sub Pop and Liquor and Poker Music, including Charged (2001) and Apollo (2006). The band experienced numerous lineup changes over the years, with Eddie Glass remaining the sole constant member and creative force. Their later work, including 2019's Holy Shit, continued to explore and refine their distinctive blend of desert rock grit and cosmic exploration.
Fans of Nebula's heavy, fuzzed-out grooves often also enjoy the sounds of Fu Manchu, who share a similar foundation in punk-inflected stoner rock. The driving riffs of Kyuss are a clear precursor to the desert rock style Nebula helped propagate. The psychedelic leanings of Earthless mirror Nebula's own extended instrumental explorations. The raw, unpolished energy of The Atomic Bitchwax also resonates with Nebula's direct and powerful approach.
