Not Your Dope

Not Your Dope: The Raw Energy of Modern Garage Punk
Not Your Dope is a garage punk trio from Portland, Oregon, known for their blistering live shows and unapologetically raw sound. The band achieved a significant underground milestone when their 2022 album, Chemical Smile, debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.
Early career
Formed in 2017, Not Your Dope coalesced from the city's DIY house show circuit. Their self-released debut EP, Static Age, in 2018, caught the attention of local independent label Rust Belt Records, which signed the band later that year.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2021 with the single Neon Guillotine. The track became a staple on college and alternative radio, leading to the band signing with larger indie label Dissonant Echo for their subsequent album. This momentum propelled their first full-length, Chemical Smile, to sell over 50,000 copies in its first year.
Key tracks
Neon Guillotine — This 2021 single broke the band on alternative radio and defined their signature high-energy punk sound.
Plastic Heart — A standout track from Chemical Smile known for its anthemic chorus and frenetic pace.
Feedback Loop — This earlier track remains a live favorite, showcasing the band's roots in chaotic garage rock.
Last Transmission — A later single that demonstrated a tighter, more melodic approach while retaining their punk edge.
Following their breakthrough, Not Your Dope embarked on extensive touring, including support slots for established punk acts. Their 2024 follow-up EP, Short Circuit, featured a collaboration with guitarist Marissa Vale from the band Sour Magic, adding a new layer of grit to their recordings.
Fans of the intense, riff-driven style of Not Your Dope should also explore The Chisel. This UK band shares a similar commitment to classic, no-frills punk energy. The melodic aggression of Amyl and The Sniffers also resonates with Not Your Dope's approach. For the raw garage element, check out Ty Segall, a prolific figure in the modern garage rock scene. The Pacific Northwest sound is further represented by The Coathangers, who blend punk with a similar DIY spirit.
