Reklam: The Swedish Electronic Pop Phenomenon

Reklam is the dynamic Swedish electronic pop project led by producer and vocalist Axel Rasmusson. Emerging from Stockholm's vibrant indie scene, the artist achieved a major commercial breakthrough with the 2018 platinum-certified album Signal, which spawned several chart-topping singles in Scandinavia.

Early career

Reklam was formed in 2012 by Axel Rasmusson, initially as a solo bedroom production endeavor in Gothenburg. The project's first official release was the 2014 self-released EP Static Dreams, which caught the attention of the independent label Cosmos Music.

This early work established Reklam's signature sound: a blend of shimmering synth-pop melodies and driving, danceable beats. Signing with Cosmos Music in 2015 allowed for more polished studio work, leading to the 2016 debut album Transmit.

Breakthrough

The defining moment arrived in 2018 with Reklam's sophomore album, Signal. Released on the larger indie label Nordic Pulse, the album's lead single, "Frequencies," became an instant radio hit across Europe. Signal reached number 3 on the Swedish albums chart and was later certified platinum for sales exceeding 80,000 copies.

This success was solidified by extensive touring and festival appearances, transforming Reklam from a studio project into a formidable live act. The album's synergy of catchy pop hooks and sophisticated electronic production defined a new peak for Scandinavian synth-pop.

Key tracks

Frequencies — This breakthrough single topped the Swedish singles chart for two weeks and introduced Reklam's sound to a mass audience.

Neon Pulse — A collaboration with fellow Swede ELLA, this track showcased Reklam's skill in vocal featuring and expanded his reach within the electronic genre.

Signal — The album's title track became an anthem for its layered production and remains a staple in the artist's live performances.

Static Interlude — This instrumental piece highlighted the project's attention to atmospheric detail and production craftsmanship.

Following the success of Signal, Reklam released the well-received 2021 album Echo Chamber, which debuted at number 5 in Sweden. The artist has since engaged in notable collaborations, including production work for other Nordic pop acts and a featured vocal on Norwegian producer KOSMO's track "Northern Lights."

Reklam's music draws clear inspiration from fellow Scandinavian electronic pop pioneers. Fans of the genre should explore Robyn for her foundational influence on emotive Swedish pop. The intricate production style is echoed in the work of The Knife, known for their innovative electronic soundscapes. Listeners also enjoy the melodic sensibilities of Galantis, another Swedish electronic music powerhouse. The moody, synth-driven approach is similar to that of Kavinsky, though with a brighter pop focus.
