Rift: The Progressive Metal Architects

Rift is a progressive metal band from Oslo, Norway, known for their complex compositions and conceptual storytelling. The group achieved a significant commercial milestone with their 2018 album, Chronos Divide, which charted in several European territories and solidified their international fanbase.

Early career

Formed in 2008, the core members of Rift met while studying music at the University of Oslo. Their initial self-released EP, Fractured Light in 2010, showcased a raw blend of melodic death metal and traditional prog, catching the attention of the underground scene.

This early work led to a development deal with the independent label Sonic Vein Records in 2012. Their first full-length album, The First Collapse, was released through the label the following year to modest but encouraging critical reception.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough arrived in 2016 with their sophomore album, Echoes in the Abyss. Signing with the larger progressive-focused label InsideOut Music allowed for wider distribution and marketing.

Echoes in the Abyss entered the Norwegian album chart at number 24 and remained in the top 40 for three weeks. The album's lead single also received regular rotation on several European rock radio stations, expanding their reach beyond the niche prog audience.

Key tracks

Echoes in the Abyss — This title track's ambitious 12-minute runtime and dynamic shifts became a signature piece, demonstrating the band's technical prowess and narrative ambition.

Chronos Trigger — The lead single from their third album earned Rift their first significant airplay on mainstream rock formats in Germany and the UK.

Asymmetric War — Featuring a guest guitar solo by Paul Waggoner of Between the Buried and Me, this track highlighted Rift's credibility and connections within the progressive metal community.

Veil of Perception — Known for its intricate odd-time signature riff, this song is a staple of their live set and a fan favorite from their debut album.

The band's most recent studio effort, 2022's Monolith, saw them experiment with more atmospheric textures and longer song suites. They collaborated with session drummer Baard Kolstad (Leprous) on several tracks, adding a new layer of rhythmic complexity to their sound.

Rift has also performed at major European festivals like Wacken Open Air and Prognosis Festival, sharing stages with genre leaders. Their musical approach shares common ground with fellow Norwegian prog-metal act Leprous in its use of emotive vocals and unconventional song structures. The conceptual depth and guitar work can be compared to Between The Buried And Me, while their blend of melody and aggression echoes the Swedish group Opeth.

Rift's music is a regular feature on progressive and metal-focused radio stations, including dedicated online rock radio streams and specialty shows on independent music radio stations. Their albums are frequently highlighted in "album of the week" segments on stations catering to the heavier, more technical end of the rock spectrum.
