Serj Tankian: The Eclectic Voice of Alternative Metal

Serj Tankian is a Lebanese-born Armenian-American musician, best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the multi-platinum alternative metal band System of a Down. His solo career, launched in 2007, expands into a vast spectrum of genres including art rock, progressive rock, and experimental music. Tankian has established himself as a distinct artistic force through five diverse solo studio albums and numerous collaborative projects.

Early Career

Born in Beirut in 1967, Serj Tankian moved to Los Angeles with his family in his youth. Before co-founding System of a Down in 1994, he studied marketing and ran a successful software company. His early musical endeavors were intertwined with the burgeoning Los Angeles metal scene, where his unique vocal style and politically charged songwriting began to take shape.

Breakthrough

Tankian's breakthrough came with System of a Down, whose self-titled debut album in 1998 introduced his distinctive voice to a global audience. The band's subsequent albums, "Toxicity" (2001) and "Mezmerize"/"Hypnotize" (2005), achieved massive commercial success and critical acclaim, selling millions of copies worldwide and solidifying his status in rock and metal. This platform provided the launchpad for his ambitious solo work.

Key Tracks

Empty Walls - The lead single from his debut solo album "Elect the Dead," this track showcased his ability to craft potent, melodic alternative rock outside of System of a Down's signature sound.

The Charade - A powerful, orchestral-driven song from the "Orca" symphony suite, demonstrating Tankian's successful foray into classical and art rock composition.

Harakiri - The title track from his 2012 album blends his signature socio-political commentary with a more accessible, melodic hard rock approach.

A.F. Day - Featured on the "Imperfect Harmonies" album, this song exemplifies his experimental rock tendencies, merging electronic elements with rock instrumentation.

Beyond his rock-oriented albums, Serj Tankian has composed several full-length symphonies, including "Orca" and "Disarming Time," and film scores. He founded the independent record label Serjical Strike Records, which has released music by artists like Fair to Midland and Buckethead. His collaborations are wide-ranging, from working with artists like Arto Tunçboyacıyan on folk-influenced projects to contributing to albums by metal acts like Testament.

Artists exploring similar territories of alternative metal, experimental rock, and politically engaged music include Tom Morello for his activist guitar work and solo projects. Mike Patton shares Tankian's vocal versatility and genre-defying experimentation across multiple bands. The art rock and progressive tendencies can be heard in the work of Mastodon, another band known for its conceptual depth.
