Shadow King
Shadow King: The Hard Rock Supergroup of the Early '90s
Shadow King was a short-lived but notable hard rock supergroup formed in the early 1990s. The band is primarily recognized for its sole, self-titled album released in 1991 on Atlantic Records.
Early Career
The group was formed in 1991, uniting vocalist Lou Gramm, formerly of Foreigner, with guitarist Vivian Campbell, who had recently left Dio and would later join Def Leppard. Bassist Bruce Turgon, a longtime collaborator with Gramm, and drummer Kevin Valentine completed the lineup, bringing together seasoned veterans of the rock scene.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough moment was the 1991 release of their only album, Shadow King, on Atlantic Records. The record delivered a polished, radio-friendly brand of hard rock that capitalized on the members' established reputations, though it arrived as musical trends were beginning to shift.
Key tracks
What Would It Take - This driving rocker served as the album's lead single, showcasing the band's accessible yet guitar-heavy sound.
Anytime, Anywhere - A melodic track that highlighted Lou Gramm's distinctive vocal style and the group's knack for strong hooks.
I Want You - This song exemplified the album's blend of crisp production and straightforward, energetic hard rock.
Following the album's release, Shadow King undertook touring to promote the record. However, the project was relatively short-lived, dissolving after roughly a year as Vivian Campbell joined Def Leppard in 1992 and Lou Gramm resumed his solo career and later work with Foreigner.
Fans of Shadow King's melodic hard rock style may also appreciate the work of Foreigner, which features Lou Gramm's iconic vocals. The guitar work is reminiscent of Dio, where Vivian Campbell played in the 1980s. For a similar blend of melody and rock power from the era, consider Bad Company or Whitesnake.
