She Past Away: Turkish Darkwave and Post-Punk Architects
She Past Away is a Turkish darkwave and post-punk duo that has become a leading force in the international gothic rock scene. Hailing from Bursa and later based in Istanbul, the group has achieved significant underground success, with their music resonating across Europe and beyond through extensive touring and a dedicated cult following.
Early career
The band was formed in 2006 by vocalist and guitarist Volkan Caner and keyboardist İdris Akbulut. Drawing inspiration from 1980s coldwave and post-punk, they began crafting a distinct sound characterized by driving basslines, stark drum machines, and Caner's deep Turkish baritone vocals. Their self-titled debut EP was released in 2009, establishing their minimalist and melancholic aesthetic within Turkey's alternative music landscape.
Breakthrough
She Past Away's international breakthrough arrived with their debut full-length album, Belirdi Gece, in 2012. The album's fusion of nostalgic analog synthesizers with modern production quickly spread through word-of-mouth and online communities dedicated to dark music. Tracks from this release became staples in gothic clubs worldwide, propelling the duo from a local project to a globally recognized name in the darkwave revival.
Key tracks
Kasvetli Kutlama - This early single encapsulates their signature sound with its hypnotic bass sequence and detached vocal delivery, becoming an instant classic in their discography.
Ritüel - A standout track known for its infectious, danceable rhythm and atmospheric synth layers, often cited as a gateway song for new listeners.
Durdu Dünya - This song showcases their ability to merge poignant, poetic Turkish lyrics with a compelling, driving post-punk instrumental foundation.
La Maldad - A later track that demonstrates their evolving sound, incorporating sharper production while maintaining their essential coldwave ethos.
Soluk - A prime example of their darker, more brooding side, featuring a relentless bassline and haunting keyboard melodies.
The band's lineup evolved with Doruk Öztürkcan joining as the permanent live keyboardist after the first album, solidifying their core touring and recording unit. Their second album, Narin Yalnızlık, released in 2015 on the German label Out of Line, further cemented their status. They have since released Disko Anksiyete in 2019 and continued to tour extensively, performing at major gothic and alternative festivals across Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Fans of She Past Away's immersive sound also explore the work of Lebanon Hanover, who share a similar dedication to minimalist coldwave and lyrical melancholy. The driving post-punk of Molchat Doma offers a comparable Eastern European perspective on the genre. The atmospheric depth of The Soft Moon resonates with their darker instrumental passages. For the iconic 80s influences that shape their music, the pioneering work of The Cure remains a foundational touchstone.
