Slik: The Scottish Glam Rock Hitmakers

Slik was a Scottish glam rock band that achieved major chart success in the mid-1970s. Hailing from Glasgow, the group is best remembered for their 1976 UK Number One single Forever and Ever, which propelled them to national fame.

Early career

The band originally formed in Glasgow in 1970 under the name Salvation. The core lineup featured vocalist and bassist Midge Ure, guitarist Jim McGinlay, and drummer Kenny Hyslop. After a period of development and a name change to Slik in 1974, they signed a recording contract with Bell Records, a label known for its pop roster.

Breakthrough

Slik's breakthrough arrived in 1975 with the release of their debut single The Kid's a Punk. However, it was their third single in 1976 that catapulted them to the top. Forever and Ever, a quintessential glam pop anthem, spent three weeks at Number One on the UK Singles Chart, selling over 250,000 copies and earning a Silver certification.

Key tracks

Forever and Ever — This chart-topping single defined the band's commercial peak with its catchy, orchestrated pop sound.

Requiem — Released as the follow-up to their Number One, this dramatic single solidified their glam style and reached the UK Top 30.

The Kid's a Punk — Their debut single introduced their initial, edgier glam rock direction to the public.

Never Never — A later single that showcased a shift towards a more power-pop oriented sound.

Capitalizing on their sudden fame, Slik released their self-titled debut album in 1976. The record, produced by the successful team of Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, mirrored the polished, anthemic style of their hits. Despite their success, the changing musical landscape and internal shifts led to a significant change; Midge Ure departed in 1977, later finding massive success with Ultravox and as a solo artist.

The remaining members rebranded as The Zones, and later as PVC2, pursuing a more new-wave influenced direction before ultimately dissolving. Slik's legacy remains firmly tied to the mid-70s glam era, with Forever and Ever enduring as a classic pop-rock single of the period.

Fans of Slik's brand of 1970s glam rock often appreciate the work of similar artists from the UK scene. The Sweet shared a knack for combining rock guitars with massive pop choruses. Mud also mastered the glam-pop formula that dominated the UK charts in that era. Bay City Rollers represented another hugely successful Scottish group with a teen-oriented pop-rock appeal. Gary Glitter embodied the more theatrical and bombastic end of the glam rock spectrum during the same period.

The music of Slik maintains a steady presence on classic rock FM stations and dedicated 70s music radio streams. Their iconic hit Forever and Ever is a staple on playlists celebrating the glam and pop-rock sounds of the decade, ensuring their work continues to reach new generations of listeners.
